Scores are feared dead and many others injured in an accident which occurred Sunday evening at Bukonte just after Namutumba town in Namutumba district along Mbale- Iganga highway.
A passenger taxi was reportedly trying to overtake another vehicle hence ramming into the YY bus enroute to Mbale, Eastern Uganda.
Eyewitnesses told Chimp Corps most of the people in the taxi are feared dead as only two have been pulled out of the wreckage with severe injuries.
Police spokesman Fred Enanga said officers were “still assessing” the accident and that accurate information would be availed shortly.
In a statement, the management of YY has also announced the incident and provided some details.
“We regret to announce an accident involving our coach at Busembatia along Tirinyi-Mbale road. A taxi crashed into the coach. All our passengers are safe,” reads part of the statement.
“Police are still working to ascertain the names and identities of the dead taxi passengers.”
This is the second accident this week involving YY coaches.
The incident occurs against the backdrop of increased criticism of YY drivers’ recklessness which many say endangers the lives of passengers and road users.
On Tuesday, YY Coach number UAQ 906 was involved in an accident at Iganga. Two people died on spot.
